TELL ME ABOUT YOUR MUSHISHI S/I!! Where did he come from?? Does he have a relationship with Ginko or anyone else?? I bet he researches Mushi, right? That seems on brand with you and your curious lil brain
Aaaaah you'd think right. I am once again answering an S/I ask with Actually I have two different Self Inserts for this fandom fdkgjfdkg
The other one, an adult who lives alone and runs a hot spring in the mountains Ginko regularly visits does Research Mushi, and writes about them in his novels. He's part of the ever growing Aro Ginko Polycule, I've talked about him a few times, he's not interesting, just kind of domestic and in love with Ginko who pays him a visit once a year or so.
A lot of my younger self inserts are much more Head Empty than my older ones, the one your asking about especially
Tumblr media
He's a kid inflicted by the Ginko who just showed up one day in Adashino's village. Adashino assumed him some sort of love child of Ginko's and sent a letter telling him to get his ass over here as soon as possible.
He appears about 7 or 8 years old, but it's hard to tell sense his knowledge seems toddler like. He doesn't know how to use chop sticks, or what he can and can't eat, or how to dress himself, and doesn't speak or seem to understand much of what anyone says to him.
He has a bad tenancy to grab Mushi by the handful and shove them in his Tokoyami filled eye, which is what lead Doctor Adashino to bandaging up the opening, sense he assumed that probably wasn't a good thing to be doing.
In the few weeks it took Ginko to arrive, Adashino got pretty attached to the kid, getting rather use to parenting his larger than most toddler. However, like Ginko, if in one place for too long Mushi will begin to swarm around him, making it dangerous for him to stay in the villager, or anywhere for that matter.
It took a lot of convincing, but Ginko eventually agreed to take the kid on as his apprentice, taking him on his travels and teaching him the dangers and nuances of Mushi.
Basically, he becomes Ginko and Adashino's adopted son over time. Whenever he gets to talking he calls Adashino "Papa", but Ginko remains just Ginko or some form of "Master"/"Sensei" when he's learning. He also calls Tanyuu variations of "Mama" or "Auntie", with Tama being "Grandma" exclusively. He doesn't like Kumado at all.

ginko 🤝 killy 🤝 the soldier from angel's egg 🤝 hopefully kim dokja: being outsiders/alone, even among any groups of people they join.
#i do not mean any of this in a tragic way no more than life itself can be tragic#it's a comfort to be alone. to be away from the eyes of others#all three of these characters (*idk fully about kdj so no spoilers pls for orv) exhibit these in different ways#ginko and killy have set duties (kdj has a plan and the duty others expect of him but he doesn't abide by those expectations just his own#plan) though ginko's is a mix of self chosen and bestowed by other mushishis (he's been involved in this since he was a kid and what else i#there really for him to do?) and killys purpose was coded into him by someone long forgotten but he still holds onto it tight#arguably most of nihei's protags are like this. zoichi is an outsider with a set purpose and same with denji. the difference is that they#have other people -- zoichi his sister and denji the twins. they're all alone but they're alone together#there's no one like killy and there won't ever be. there's no one like ginko. there's no one quite like kdj#(musubi also doesn't count because she went from someone heavily integrated in society to shoved out of it. ginko and killy don't remember#being with others. i think i did see a spoiler of kdj having memory issues? anyways he was ostracized at a young age so that counts more#than musubi)#and then there's the fates of these characters. killy will never rest. he doesn't know how *cue nihil strength*. ginko does rest but he#always moves again in the end. it's a cycle he's in.#idk what happens to kdj but what i really want to happen is for him to escape the story#that would be the ultimate form of rest. to die to sleep; to sleep perchance to dream.#though here it is not a literal death i wish for kdj. the death of the character he is. the death of him having to be in orv if that makes#sense. loathe to use the words but let him escape the narrative. let that be his death#the soldier is a late add on but he coutns too#he is very similar to killy first off#and i'll leave it there for now because i really gotta do work so i can rest#there are other characters i can argue (alexei karamazov is coming to mind for starters)#i really feel characters who are alone on account of the leaving.

Mushishi week, day 4! Vigil / Crossover
Obvious crossovers that I've seen (and would love to do one day) are Mononoke and Natsume Yuujinchou, but I've had Yamato from Naruto in the Mushishi world in mind for quite a while! So yeah I did that for this prompt instead :3 This little comic is a lot sillier than what I had in mind back then, but I've given up on that idea for now.
Just love the idea of Yamato living in peace with his Mokuton the way Shinra from chapter one does with his drawings that come to life. Not being used as a lab rat or a secret weapon or whatever. Just a man who can make stuff he likes out of wood that grows from his body lol.
Also also lil note: "Adashino would pay a fortune for this" means "Adashino would love this," not "I'm going to try to sell this kind gift to a friend for a lot of money." I think Ginko will want to keep it.

Little doodle drop, none are finished but w/e. Ginko is hard to draw without him coming off as a little emo boy, instead of a little emo man as he truly is. Also capturing that quintessential melancholic feel the anime and manga has is hard, major props to the mangaka for being able to pull it off effortlessly. Random rambles under the cut
So I'm trying to find the perfect ink/pen combo for Ginko cause I just... think it would be fun? and I want to. And I think I found a good pen, it matches the general mushishi vibe better than just the character, but I'm struggling a bit with the ink. I want something thats a sort of a duller teal, I think I'm just going to mix it myself. I'm going to wait until I have the pen in my hands first though, and while I do that I'm doing the same for a couple of different characters from other franchises I have.

Have you talked about Avery's voice at all, what it would sound like?
Also I'm not sure if there's already a cat anon, but if there's not, I'd like to start signing off as this if you're okay with that, since this my second or third ask I've sent you
- 🐈‍⬛
No cat anon yet, so you're good! 💙
I'll be honest -- Avery's voice is something I agonize over.
I have listened to so many voices. I spend hours listening to voice actors, characters, etc... I've never found one that is perfect.
Here's how I would describe it:
His voice is smooth, soft and breathy, not too deep, but not too high, either. He CAN be loud, when he's angry. He has a neutral American accent, and is very thoughtful and well-spoken when he speaks. Outside of idioms, he does not use slang or swear, ever.
His laugh is giggly with an escalating heartiness, and is very full and loud when he's laughing hard. He can sing, but has a fairly shy/quiet singing voice... well-suited for lullabies.
So far, the closest I've found overall is Beast from X-Men: The Animated Series (George Buza). The newer show, X-Men '97, actually has the same voice actor, but I think his delivery is closer to Avery in the older show.
There are a lot of British actors who have voices similar to how I'd imagine Avery's, but he is not British, so they all miss the mark.
Merlin from the Disney movie Sword in the Stone (Karl Swenson) has a giggly laugh like Avery's, but Avery is not British.
Kurama from Yuyu Hakusho (John Burgmeier, also Tien from Dragonball, but his delivery for Tien is different) speaks with the same softness and intelligence that Avery would, but, again, Avery is not British. Baron from The Cat Returns (Cary Elwes) is close for the same reasons, and misses the mark for the same reasons.
Cillian Murphy's delivery as Oppenheimer is somewhat close in terms of quality and the "way" he speaks, but his voice is too deep and doesn't quite hit the mark.
Professor Elm from Pokemon (Nathan Price) is also kinda close, but his voice is too high and a bit nasally to suit Avery (though I enjoy the character quite a bit and he does remind me of Avery).
Other considerations I've had: Joe Pera, Bob Ross, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, Christian Bale, Robert Frobisher, Eddie Redmayne, Brian Bedford, Travis Willingham (Ginko in Mushishi), Derek Jacobi (Nicodemus in Secret of NIMH), Ian Sinclair (Brook in One Piece, also Whis in Dragonball). All have one quality or another that suits Avery, but none of them are right.
Like I said, I agonize over this. If anyone has suggestions you'd like to throw my way, I'd be thrilled!

Okay so at first I was thinking: GAY GINKO CONFIRMED. But no I don't think that's what's going on here, much as I would absolutely love that. I think, what i took for Ginko being young, Ginko being a woman? Maybe? So, trans Ginko confirmed?
Sitting here thinking about it, it's not IMPOSSIBLE, but do I think it's LIKELY in this kind of story, or is it that I made a fuckup elsewhere?
I think I just assumed the person who looked like Ginko was in fact GInko, but I think I'm wrong. Which means, if we're going back in time, that Yoki has to be Ginko. I have had this completely wrong from the jump. So Ginko has no family, really, other than possibly Nui and I still think that's going to fuck up somehow.
Also, also, if Yoki is Ginko, and part of escaping from the Tokoyami is coming up with a name for yourself, that must be how it happened. So, he has this tragic story of his mother, and living with Nui and caring about her, but it's okay because he doesn't remember any of it! I guess?
PLease please do not spoil anything for me in your excitement. I don’t want to know anything! I don’t even want to know if something is a  cultural difference, or if you can’t wait for me to get to a part. If I  wonder about something, please don’t say stuff like “Just wait til…” You know what is great for all that? The discord! Which apparently has its own mushishi channel now, which must mean y’all are excited for it!

oc-tober day 14: who/what inspired your ocs
always a tough question! i never usually keep track of my inspirations, and often go through series too fast to remember what i'd end up drawing from it. most of my characters are also inspired by/draw from other characters of mine, picking out specific traits and parts of their history to remix and see how things happen differently if certain variables are tweaked.
for the specifics ! ↴
for kea:
the other characters of my own i've put here are beren and sil. i would elaborate, but i'd literally go on forever. this'll make sense if i ever start posting about them!
for the existing characters, it's alma karma from dgm, especially visually, and rakka from haibane renmei (a favourite anime from when i was a kid) in a few senses. unfortunately i think they may have also channelled a bit of izaya orihara, faye valentine and twelve from zankyou no terror in esoteric ways. im trying to think of non-anime characters that may have been katamari'd into them but my memory isn't that good! i may go back and edit this if i have a sudden ahah moment about them. HOWL from howls moving castle both book and movie versions
as for the incident that inspired them or how they were created, i would prefer not to talk about it (kind of a bad memory at this point! took a long time to wash them of it), but at their core they were me trying to fit my favourite archetype (fantasy rogues) into a cowboy. the first attempt at this was scattered and not that well put together, but on their second rewrite i feel their background is more cohesive. they were also massively inspired by things i was going through at the time and the job i had, which has informed certain aspects of their character that made their way to the forefront over time. just this year i started working at a ranch, which is what inspired that rewrite, so i think that also affects part of their character.
i think this one might be very obvious, but they were inspired by the kea, as in the aotearoan parrot. kea was originally just gonna be a placeholder name for them, but like many of my placeholder names, it stuck. their wings are just a kea's transposed onto their back, and their mischievous/destructive nature is inspired by them. i love keas a lot lmao
for revak:
the other characters of my own i have down for him are vol, felanic, and raf. there's way too much to go into there, so i'll leave it to if i ever post about them in the future.
for the other characters, i think possibly warumono-san from mr. villains day off stuck in my head when i was designing him (i'd read a few chapters back in 2019, but forgot about it until recently. entirely possible for the image to have lodged in there and fallen loose for him!) and hazama kuroo, ginko from mushishi, olruggio from witch hat atelier, murderbot from the murderbot diaries. other inspirations i can see for him include rose from legend of dragoon and jin from samurai champloo. there's probably more but i'm forgetting them... one of my partner's inspirations for them that i can remember off the top of my head was percival de rolo.
i made him back around august/september of 2023. kea's story had holes that needed filling, and while coming up with ideas for other main and supporting characters revak came around. he's the result of an idea i left unused for kea themself; at one point i was thinking of turning kea into a monster in a very physical way, giving them the ability to shapeshift - first into a toxic eel-like creature, then into a poisonous lizard. i liked the idea of a character with a poisonous kiss, which seemed fitting for them.
kea's story needed a specific start - their character establishing moment is robbing a rich person and failing, which is how the more mundane aspects of revak's character came around. i liked the eccentric and hardworking but distant from the world/kind of naive character that resulted from me trying to justify keeping a rich guy around. eventually decided at some point that kea had enough going on as-is and slapped the "poisonous shapeshifter" aspect onto him instead, which is when revak came into the concept he is now, a venomous sea dragon shapeshifter who's estranged from his own family history and other side. there is a bit of irony in this idea, but for reasons that're secret 🤫
when my partner and i started writing together and swapping ocs around she took the lead on revak and changed him to the way he is now, fully fleshed out. one of the funnier changes they made is revak was originally supposed to be 5'11", but she took him and stretched him out to 6'4", since they tend to make taller characters.
and thats how they were made! if you want more of "what thought went into the characters" in a general sense, it was my love of hypocritical and dynamic characters that change a lot over the course of a story. they both have a lot of terrible aspects that can at times bury their strengths, and struggle with the concept of being a good person/who they are with what's been done to them. disregarding everything else, the main themes of their story and arcs are identity, coming to terms with your past, and not giving up on people.
ok thatse it 👍 thanks for getting this far. i have no clue if these words in this order makes sense

Hello, I'd like you to break some asses down. No obvious characters for you, gimme: Kafka, Ginko, Ashton and Re-l. Thank.
Hi sibby bibby! Definitely not going easy on me with these, but let's see!
Kafka of Kaiju no. 8
He's so everything one can want in a main lead of a story. He's the beaten up dreamer version of a typical hero that grew up, accepted defeat, but remained kind and supportive. He throws himself whole into a second chance, never looks down on or hates younger people who have their successes come much easier. He's goofy, sweet, relentless, powerful in kindness. 10/10 would kiss on cheek.
Mina and Hoshina, preferable in world's most ride or die battle powerthrouple.
Reno and Kikoru, the kids he randomly found on a street and said 'is anyone gonna love and take care of these?' and then ran off with them without waiting for an answer.
Not involved in fandom enough to know what's popular fanon, but I think he's a needy switch and quite inexperienced because he was pining away for Mina. He takes to learning with gusto as with anything else, though.
That he wholly accepted it is him as person that made all of his efforts worth it, saved lives, not his monster-self. And also Kafkohismina downtime or battlethrouple scenes.
Ginko of Mushishi
He is so. *clenches fist* He says I don't care while he cares, so deeply. There is air of forever haunting melancholy and longing about him. A forever wandering half-myth that yearns to belong, that bears so many stories. He's so everything.
Adashino and Tanyuu. The letter writing ot3 AU we've created has changed me as a person, for the better.
Honestly? Same two. Their relationship is based on friendship, respect, unique bonds that are never on-screen romantic, so you can see them as you wish. Also I think he and Tama Minai have interesting dynamic that would be great to expand further. And of course Nui. Oh Nui.
Hits him with demisexual beam, just like every other character I love.
More on-screen maintaining of friendships with Adashino and Tanyuu via letters and the like. Also I know the point is that he can't settle down, that he is forever wanderer, but my heart can yearn for him to have a place called home.
Ashton Greymoore of Critical Role, Bell's Hells.
I admit I've fallen off the bandwagon and I wrestle with feeling like I misunderstood some things of his character since I can't quite understand some of their latest choices, but, in my heart of hearts, Ashton will always be LOML. I imprinted on them from getgo, instantly saw the undercurrents of care and golden, cracked heart they try to conceal. I just want to take care of them, so so badly, and to let them know they deserve it, no matter what. That they don't have to earn it or buy it. That they just have to be. Embarassingly, closest I've come to making OC to ship with someone, at height of my BH time.
Frankly? No one.
FCG, absolutely. I also think them and Orym make for an interesting 'our safety last, as long as our friends aren't hurt' kind of tank duo.
I don't like him and Fe*rne as a ship. Might be because her character as a whole doesn't appeal much to me, maybe because I don't see them embracing their growth and heart of hearts with her, whatever it is, it just doesn't tickle my fancy, but I fully respect character choices made by players. As long as Taliesin is having fun! He knows Ashton the best. Also I wish they'd been liked and appreciated by fandom for more than just being part of a ship. Before those took off, you could hardly find Ashton content. Even still, the focus on them is often quite shippy.
I am forever haunted by the time their worst fears were shown to be them losing control of themselves and the alternate lives shown as them being a king, a leader. I really wish they could embrace that more, be heard and seen, instead of sometimes their ideas even being attributed to other members of the party. There was a time when I'd have killed for a fic where they become part of Keyleth's entourage/just hang out with Ashari and get a chance to be comfortable.
Re-L from Ergo Proxy.
13 year old me thought she was the PEAK cool. One of aesthetic-bi awakenings. Did I want to be her or just stare at her? Yes. During rewatches as an adult, I have come to appreciate the complexity of her character and most of all, her growth from sheltered, straining-against-it young woman to a driven person with spiky shell, but that shell will also shelter others, if you earn her trust and her care. Considering how much was hidden from her, how much lies and betrayal she uncovered, it's hard to blame her for not being open with it immediately.
Vincent and particularly, Ergo Proxy. She and Mina would be gun-toting, monsterfucking besties for sure.
Pino and Re-l are such an underrated dynamic. There is something to be said about Iggy as well, especially since it's hard to tell if his pre-demise behavior was "truth" or not.
Too arrogant, uptight and demisexual to have had proper previous relationships. Also probably had some truly loser phases of makeup that Iggy has photos of.
I wish she had more time to unpack everything about Daedalus, her grandfather, who she is. The last act of anime didn't give many of these things any breathing room. I am fascinated to explore how she changed and grew in wake of it all.
Give me a character?<3

Anyone else a fan of Mushishi? Because I have a conspiracy about our beloved Ginko (that might already have been thought of) but has left me devastated.
So we all know that Ginko's real name was Yoki, and that he was found injured by a lady Mushi Master named Nui. Yoki stumbles across a pond filled with white fish that have one green eye. Surprised, Yoki asks Nui about the fish and she explains to him that they became white, lose one eye and have the other turn green after exposure to the Mushi in the pond. She doesn't know their name, but calls them Ginko Mushi. Yoki asks if this happened to her, and she tells him it is, and explains about her family, and the reason she lingers at the pond is the hopes that they might find their way back, despite the dangers. She reassures him that the fish never lose their other eye. That is a lie of course, one that Yoki finds out. Yoki sneaks out to view the Ginko Mushi and discovers that they do lose their eye, and disappear. Nui finds him and he confronts her about it. She reveals that they end up being consumed by the Tokoyami that live in the shadows of the pond. That she knows that her family are not wandering around without their memories, but are a part of the Tokoyami in the pond. That after experimenting on the fish, she learned that they all, inevitably, become consumed by the Tokoyami. And after repeated exposure, she too has doomed herself and that she has run out of time. She sends Yoki away, but he realizes that she's going to disappear, so he goes back as she's being consumed, and latches onto her, being partially consumed himself. She drags him along, desperately, away from the pond and tells him to avoid being consumed by the Tokoyami, he must keep one eye closed and focus on trying to remember one thing. That in doing so, even though he will lose all his memories except the one thing he was able to remember, he will avoid being consumed by the Tokoyami. And so, Yoki finds himself out of the forest, no memories other than the word Ginko, white hair, one green eye and one missing eye that is consumed by darkness that seems to eat any light shined into it.
Now let's circle back to something. Nui experimented on the fish exposed to the Ginko Mushi. And they all succumbed to the Tokoyami. She herself succumbed to them. There is no cure. No escape. She was only able to prolong the life of the fish she experimented on. And she shortened her life with continued exposure. So that means, that the newly dubbed Ginko, will eventually succumb to the Tokoyami. Many of you might have come to that conclusion already. And I applaud you, because it took me watching the show three times to catch that. But wait (like an annoying infomercial) there's more! Tokoyami consume light! And Ginko's missing eye does the same! So that leads me to believe, that the Tokoyami are living in the place his eye once resided in. Which means he is in constant exposure to them. So not only will he eventually be consumed... but it is highly possible, that his lifespan is being shortened by these Mushi living in his eye.
But that's not the only thing pulling at my heartstrings. Surely, others know about these Mushi. After all, Tokoyami have been referenced before; even if Nui made up the name for the Ginko that reside along side them. And Ginko, a Mushi Master, who has traveled to the only Mushi library and read nearly all of the scrolls, has surely come across a reference to Mushi that turn hair white and an eye green while eating the other. After all, after hundreds of years and Mushi Masters telling their stories, someone has had to have seen them and documented them.
And him knowing would make so much sense! Sure, as a child, who didn't know anything and had taken the name of Ginko because that was all he knew; would think it perfectly reasonable to see his eye as cursed due to the fact that Mushi were drawn to him. And it would seem reasonable to keep on the move to avoid bringing bad luck onto others. Because how could he know that there were others who attracted Mushi too? But he's an adult now. With years of experience and information at his disposal. He knows better. He knows he doesn't have to keep on the move. He's seen others who attract Mushi live mostly normal lives in or near villages. He's seen Mushi Masters settle down. There are probably Mushi Masters who travel that have families. He doesn't have to keep on the move. He's shown that at times he's reluctant to leave (his hesitance over leaving the sister and brother in the valley that has the Mushi that take the form of butterflies). In fact, he makes it a point to sneak away so as not to have to deal with goodbyes or have people try to convince him to stay. We've seen how when he says he can't stay due to drawing in Mushi, no one seems to buy it. It's an excuse. One that everyone seems to just begrudgingly accept. Sure, he was kicked out of the nomad group and others due to drawing in too many Mushi. But that was when he was a child, and not fully equipped to deal with the Mushi. But again, he's a Master now. He can handle things now. Yet he holds everyone at arms length, mourns not being able to stay when he desperately wants to. When people desperately want him too. And the only reason I can think of that he would keep doing this to himself, this self imposed isolation, is because he KNOWS!
He knows that at any time, any day or month or year, he could be consumed by the Tokoyami. And he doesn't want to burden anyone with that. When people ask why he looks the way he does, the way he responds with "I don't know" just doesn't seem genuine. It seems pained. Like he does know, but doesn't want to say. Why when he jokes that he's hard to kill, he doesn't sound very proud, even if he says it in a joking way. It comes off as more depressed. Like dark humor. Like he wishes he would get taken out before the Tokoyami do it. He throws himself into danger with no hesitation. Like a man willing to die. Like a man with nothing to live for. Other than endless wandering. Sure, he loves discovering Mushi, is fond of them in a way. But there is always a melancholy about him. He's never really panicked when he comes close to dying, like he's accepting his fate. He takes being stabbed so casually. Jokes that he should have expected it. He even seems irritated when he wakes up. Irritated over being stabbed? Or irritated that he lived? When faced with the possibility of being reborn, he hates the idea and wishes he could die and just be dead. Not come back. He shows no interest in the possibility of becoming a Mushi like the grandmother did in the first episode. Curious over the process, sure. But the way he speaks, he sounds as if dying and passing on into the afterlife would be preferable. Again and again, he shows little regard for his safety. Continuously views the River of Light even though it's dangerous. Takes risks, even if their calculated. Refuses to let connections with others become deeper. Refuses to settle down when he could reasonably live in a isolated place and visit neighboring villages and even start a family. But he lives his life of solitude and sadness and tries to convince himself that seeking Mushi is more than enough. Why?
Because he knows he is a lost cause. And can't hurt the people he's grown to care about. Because what's worse? Telling them that he's going to die and become consumed by the Tokoyami and there's nothing he or they can do? Leaving them to mourn him every time they think about him or see him. Or just to disappear from their lives one day? A mystery. He's always getting into dangerous situations. It's possible that he just didn't survive one dangerous encounter.
I think Ginko knows. And that's why he's always on the move. Because he's scared to settle down and hurt someone. Maybe he's even scared to admit the truth. Because if he stays, if he gets too attached, then how can he cope with the knowledge that he could disappear from their lives at any given moment. Because he doesn't want to leave them. But what he wants doesn't matter, because some things can't be changed.

Rules: List Five Comfort Characters And Tag Five People. This is in no particular order.
Tagged by the lovely @jaz--hands !
1. Ginko from mushishi. I love this man, he just has such good vibes. The whole show is just comforting, and hell, it's my go-to show to watch if I'm sad and want to watch something.
2. Natsume from Natsume yuujincho. Maybe less of a comfort character and more of a comfort show though, now that I think of it... Its also another show that's just chill and has good vibes.
3. Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Trigun. incredible man, I think I want to just be him. He's kind but also gruff around the edges, he's doing the best he can. He's both suave in some ways and then incredibly idiotic in others, plus the amount of Christian guilt this man carries is a mood. Rotating him in my mind constantly.
4. Vash the Stampede, Trigun. I think it's the unwavering continued choice to be kind, that always gets me. Fuck man. To be kind after everything, especially after everything, to be open to others. To be still so terribly righteously angry about issues because you care, but also understanding that being kind and holding others responsible is really the only way forward and that death/punishment only perpetuates harm. That and the phrase of you take yourself too lightly in regards also to the way you treat yourself. Fucking life changing. *Cue me squinting at all my bad habits*
5. Gintoki Sakata, Gintama. I'm really a sucker for traumatized men who have kind hearts huh. Also men that are badasses but the rest of the time fucking idiots. He's just comforting because he's not like... Trying to be something and he's just getting by, and you know what, that's ok, because he actually cares about people which is what matters. We do love a good anticapitalist. He's also got bad coping mechanisms for things which is a mood.
For tagging, I'll tag @sakvnosuke @crowlore @origami10 @petallswildsurge @mothghhost @cryptids-and-muses if you would like to do it, and anyone who sees this and wants to join in :)

Not really... Ginko says keeping mushi is dangerous, and the animals around here don't seem interested in getting close to me. I guess I don't know for sure if Ginko doesn't have a pet, but I've never seen him with one... Maybe I'll ask next time he visits...
6. Can your f/o lift you? Can you lift them?
Yes! To both! I've lifted Ginko before, though only over my back when he passed out in the hot spring once from staying in too long. I'm use to helping elders who come by in and out of the spring so despite how I look I can lift more than you'd think.
As for can Ginko lift me... Well one time we were on a walk in the mountain during winter when I slipped and ended up twisting my ankle. Ginko gave me a piggy-back ride back to my home and bandaged me up... So yes he can lift me..
11. Would your f/o still love you if you were a worm? How about vice versa?
If I were a... worm...? How would I have become a worm? Does Ginko know it's me who's the worm? Is there a Mushi that turns you into a worm...? I suppose I'll ask him next time he comes by...
13. Who takes the spiders outside?
It's my house, so I do. Though Ginko rarely visits during spider weather.

also going to add more to this by copying from discord messages rambling to my partner about the parallels (spoilers)
i simply think solanum would make a great mushi-shi and ginko would love to investigate the eye of the universe and follow the hatchling's journey
the nomai culture of curiousity and respect for nature is very ginkocore - also a lot of the things happening in outer wilds like quantum objects, solanum dying in 5 locations but partially alive in one, everything about dark bramble, etc. i could totally see as mushishi episodes if you just shift around the sci-fi aspects a bit - plus the eye being The Thing in the game that receives both reverence and resentment, both fear and longing, from the owlks and nomai and etc from all of the effects it has on their lives when it's just doing the same thing it's always been doing to exist and follow its nature (of sending out signals so that someone can restart the dying universe), even if its nature is on a scale that the other species can't easily comprehend - many parallels to mushi imo
outer wilds and mushishi have like... the same vibe to me. despite sharing no similarities in setting/characters/plot/etc.

the themes of coexisting with the forces of nature, even when they bring tragedy with them? the wonder of investigating the mysteries of the universe beyond one's comprehension? ough it's so good

Anime/Manga Recommendation Round Up
Anime and manga recommendation thread of things I’ve been enjoying in recent years~
Tumblr media
~I’ll link any dedicated posts I have to these~
~Links to my other manga posts here~
My personal favs/ones I super enjoyed will have a ✨ on them :)
(Some of these might not have official EN translations since any physical manga I read are JP copies. I guess if any sound interesting, ask publishers to license them!)
I won’t get too much into what they’re about because I think finding out is part of the fun. I’ll mostly list the genres and a little blurb. Some of these I feel like I rarely hear anyone talk about so it would be cool to see people try these :)
PLEASE LOOK UP ANY TRIGGER WARNINGS!
HORROR, SUPERNATURAL
✨The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumoku Ren
(4 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Picked it up earlier this year up knowing nothing but was immediately gripped by the eerie mood. Takes place in the country side where mysterious things have been happening. My friend couldn’t stop reading when I recommended it.
ACTION, THRILLER, DRAMA, CRIME
✨Banana Fish by Yoshida Akimi
(19 volumes + side stories, completed)
It’s getting reprinted in English, so what are you waiting for!
Anime - yes and it’s so good…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The manga is from the 80’s-90’s but the anime updated it in 2018.
Without giving too much away, it takes place in NY where our characters are trying to break out of the vicious cycle of violence and figure out a mystery that’s also connected to a conspiracy. Lovable cast, keeps you on the edge of your seat. I’m obsessed.
DRAMA, ROMANCE, LGBTQ
Lovers’ Kiss by Yoshida Akimi
(2 volumes, completed)
JP only
Tumblr media
A short story where high schoolers are just trying to figure life out. Yoshida-sensei has this way of writing human stories and melancholy/tragedy while still leaving a glimmer of hope.
HISTORICAL, SUPERNATURAL
✨Mushishi by Urushibara Yuki
(10 volumes, complete)
I think the physicals are out of print but you can read it on bookwalker. It deserves a reprint!!!
Anime - yes, it’s a whole vibe please watch it
Tumblr media
I watched S1 ages ago but never got to the rest until recently. Recently picked up the manga and plan to read it eventually. Another top fav of all time. Amazing atmosphere. We see the daily life of mushi expert Ginko deal with mysterious phenomenon mushi cause.
COMEDY, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Yotsuba&! by Azuma Kiyohiko
(15 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Tumblr media
This series is super cute, wholesome, and hilarious! Yotsuba is honestly a delight, and following her daily life as she befriends her new neighbors is just a good time. Yet another fav of all time.
DRAMA, ART, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Blue Period by Yamaguchi Tsubasa
(15 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Anime - yes, but… listen I’ve never said “don’t watch the anime” because everyone can enjoy stuff however they want but... don’t watch the anime… I’ve never been so offended by an adaption ;_;
Tumblr media
After discovering something he’s passionate about for the first time, Yatora navigates the art world despite his fears and being a complete newcomer. This series made me cry so much, I love it… please
ROMANCE
In the Clear Moonlight Dusk by Yamamori Mika
(7 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Blind-bought this a while ago. Yoi is dubbed “Prince” by her classmates for her cool demeanor, but she’s not the only one.
YOI IS MY GIRL!!!
ROMCOM, ACTION
MARRIAGETOXIN by Joumyaku and Yoda Mizuki
(3 volumes, ongoing)
Available for free on Shueisha’s mangaplus site
Tumblr media
Assassin Gero needs to produce an heir so his sister can stay with her gf, but the social skills he needs to win a girl over need some help. This series is so funny and wholesome, all around a good time!
ACTION, ADVENTURE, FANTASY
✨Yona of the Dawn by Kusanagi Mizuho
(44 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Anime - yes, but I haven’t seen it yet so idk
Tumblr media
I’m not very far in this one yet, but I’m having a great time. Love the friendship, the found family vibes. Seeing Yona acknowledge that she is naive and then stepping up is awesome.
idk how I slept on this for so long since it seems like something right up my alley. Literally picked up a lot of all the 39 currently out volumes (it came with the light novel too), no questions asked. I’m only a few volumes in, but I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s giving me Ertugrul vibes (the historical Turkish drama). No, I won’t expand on that point, go watch Ertugrul!
Tumblr media
I’m committed apparently...
ROMANCE
A Sign of Affection by Morishita Suu
(10 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Blind-buy. A cute romance between a deaf girl and a well-traveled guy.
FANTASY, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Ascendance of a Bookworm by Kazuki Miya and Shiina You
(3 seasons, ongoing)
Available in English - originally a light novel
Anime - yes, I’ve been watching this not reading it yet
Tumblr media
Listen, isekai just don’t ever click with me, but this one does. There’s political drama and we get to learn about the culture and daily lives of people living in this world.
Our mc is reincarnated into a medieval fantasy world where access to books is limited, making it her personal hell. But don’t worry, she gonna do something about it! This series is so interesting and I love the character dynamics. Even if isekai aren’t your thing, try this!
DRAMA, HISTORICAL, POLITICAL
✨Requiem of the Rose King by Kanno Aya
(17 volumes, complete)
Available in English
It has an anime but I heard fans were really mad at the adaption. I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment.
Tumblr media
Normally not the kind of thing I would go for, but this series has me constantly screaming. IT’S SO MESSY, but the good kind of messy. It takes every fiber in my body to contain myself when reading in public. It features an mc who was born intersex and a battle for the crown of England.
DRAMA
My Broken Mariko by Hirako Waka
(one shot)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Saw this at the bookstore and I looked at the cover like “wow, she looks like she’s really going through it…and she’s carrying someone’s ashes, oh no…” Didn’t know anything else about it but, oof, it’s a heavy one…
DRAMA
Look Back and ✨Goodbye Eri by Fujimoto Tatsuki
(one shots)
Available in English - also on the Jump app
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Fujimoto-sensei’s more well-known work wasn’t 100% clicking with me, I tried his one shots and really enjoyed them. I particularly liked the cinematic feeling and environmental storytelling.
Maybe when I’m up to it, I’ll do posts on some of these that go into a little more detail on how I felt about them idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fictional favorites vs real life favorites challenge
I was thinking about this for a while and understood that I wouldn't date a big part of my favorite otome games characters, though, I would happily date 3 out of 4 my favorite literature favorites. So, here I am, starting a new challenge. Hope you'll enjoy it. Everyone who is interested in participating, please tell me and I'll tag you. For now, I'm tagging @juminsmysticmc, @lys-lilac, @iluvsuga14, @toshiakikijima, @sekainoongaku, @username-janai-katsura-da, @lemmelynn, @neerons and everyone else who wants to participate. Sorry if I forgot anyone.
The questions are:
1. Who are your favorite characters from otome games?
2. Who would you date in real life out of them?
3. Who are your favorite characters from books?
4. Which of them would you date?
5. Do you have any manga/anime characters that you love? Which of them?
6. Would you date any of them?
7. What fictional characters do you find the most attractive?
8. What real life people do you find the most attractive?
9. What are three things you find the most appealing in a fictional character?
10. What three things are you looking for in real life people?
11. Name other fictional favorites that don't fall in any categories I mentioned.
12. Name some real life people that you admire.
So, here are my answers.
1. Who are your favorite characters from otome games?
Gerald Yori (Kortia), Tadashi Nakano (Sweet Elite), Toshiaki Kijima (Irresistible Mistakes), Jun Araki (Irresistible Mistakes), Hideki Ishigami (Her Love In The Force/My Sweet Bodyguard), Jumin Han (Mystic Messenger)
2. Who would you date in real life out of them?
Gerald Yori and Hideki Ishigami for sure. Actually, I would date Takaomi Tsugaru (Her Love In The Force) too, even if he isn't in my top 3 Voltage men. Why? Because we are both idiots and eat strange food. We would vibe together on strange things.
3. Who are your favorite characters from books?
Martin Eden (Martin Eden), Shogo Kawada (Battle Royale), Stanislaus Katczinsky (All Quiet On The Western Front), Rhett Butler (Gone With The Wind)
4. Which of them would you date?
Martin Eden, Shogo Kawada and Stanislaus Katczinsky. (I have something for *spoiler* guys, if you know what I mean. Really, message me if you know or want to know what is underneath *spoiler*.)
5. Do you have any manga/anime characters that you love? Which of them?
Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist), Ginko (Mushishi) and Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop)
6. Would you date any of them?
Yes. Jet Black, anytime. If you know where is Ginko, call me. (No. I have a boyfriend.)
7. What fictional characters do you find the most attractive?
Takahisa Togo (Rose In The Embers), Toshiki Kasumi, Daichi Katsuragi (My Sweet Bodyguard), Decim (Death Parade), Ginko, Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)
8. What real life people do you find the most attractive?
Rowoon (from SF9), Clark Gable and a never-ending list of beautiful girls and women that include Shiroma Miru (NHK48), emmanoodle (search her on Youtube), my roommate, @aqvarius (Have you seen her selfies? She's gorgeous.) and so on.
9. What are three things you find the most appealing in a fictional character?
Intelligence, aloofness, care
10. What three things are you looking for in real life people?
Open-mindness/tolerance, kindness, humor
11. Name other fictional favorites that don't fall in any categories I mentioned.
Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds)
12. Name some real life people that you admire.
Richard Feynman and Antoine de Saint-Exupery. One was funny, simple, extremely intelligent and the other one was full of humanity.
Now, I hope I didn't scare you with how my interests jump from one thing to another. You just have to see my list of favorite books and my nearly 700 songs playlist to understand the real catastrophe.
Again, hope you liked it and you'll participate. Have fun.

This is one of at least a handful of times that Ginko has alluded to the fact that he might be a mushi. I know that I formulated that theory early on, and I suppose I would be willing to take the criticism that I'm just married to it until the moment Ginko goes, "here are my human parents" because even the fact that he's grown up from a youth into an adult like seemingly 'normal' counters that.
And he's not DIRECTLY saying that, he's just putting himself in the same sentence, so I think maybe I'm just being wild here.
